ABC is involved with the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) which is the “leading charitable organization of the entertainment industry”. After Obama asked Americans to serve others, they decided to respond with a week-long television campaign called “iParticipate” to inspire action and promote a new way of thinking about service. They asked everyone to try to incorporate volunteerism into their shows in order to make a positive impact in our community (and throughout the country). Many shows (on several networks) are participating. Jimmy agreed to be a part of this service week and chose Habitat for Humanity as our charity.
- iParticipate is the week of October 19th (next week)
- On Saturday October 10th, 75 members of the Jimmy Kimmel Live staff/crew volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Pacoima, CA.
- It is the San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita Valley chapter.
- We started the day (alongside 900 other people) with a 5K which raised awareness for Habitat and over $85,000.
- Then we participated in a big event that they call the “Ground-breaking Wave” where we broke ground on 24 new homes that are going to be built by Habitat in the coming months.
- All of the families that are moving into these homes were there.
- The homes we broke ground on are the final 24 homes in a 61 home project. 20 are already built, 11 are just being finished and 6 have been framed.
- The Kimmel staff/crew spent the rest of the day working on the six Habitat homes that have already been framed.
- We did siding, installed sliding doors, secured wood beams with brackets and other various projects.
- This piece will air on our show on Thursday 10/22.
