GREY'S ANATOMY - "Holidaze" -- As Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's pass, Miranda is visited by her father, William, who disapproves of her choices in life; meanwhile, Mark and Lexie must cope with the shocking arrival of a woman from his past, and Thatcher Grey questions the Chief's recent behavior as Meredith comes to his defense, on "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/DANNY FELD)CHYLER LEIGH, LEVEN RAMBIN

We spend three momentous holidays—Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve—with the staff of Seattle Grace.

Mark—and we—are stunned when a beautiful blonde walks into the ER and tells him, "I'm pretty sure you're my dad!" Turns out, she's right, the product of a youthful affair that Mark would rather forget. Mark feels so guilty, he lets 18-year-old Sloan (yes, her mother named her after him!) stay with him and Lexie indefinitely. Lexie is a champ—even if she cuts off part of her finger at the news that Sloan is moving in—but finally gives Mark an ultimatum: "No more sex until you talk to her." Sloan says she knows she's overstayed her welcome, but confesses she's pregnant and has nowhere else to go. Mark hugs her and lets her stay.

Keeping a Secret?

Meredith is keeping the Chief's drinking a secret. Is she right, or should she tell someone? Who should she tell?

brittma23

I think she should keep her trap shut, until it starts affecting his work..... hes drinking has nothing to do with her its his personal thing. if it bothers her she should talk to him about more and threaten that if he doesn't get some medical help she would be forced to tell someone and take matters into her on hands. thats if she cares enough, which we all knows she does.

i think most annoying couple in this show is christina and hunt.i hope its christina instead of omally should die in the series. how the heck she says she is jewish, her mom is not and her dad is not either. most annoying is her acting. hope she will not be seen in the next season.

i think she should tell dereck because i have a feeling it is going to be a big problem in their marriage down the line. I think that is where mer/der storyline going mer keeping richard's secret from him and he will be mad at her. but to me mer shouldn't tell anybody because it's not her business to tell, but mostly likely der would get mad when he finds out about it and she knew and did not tell him. Der will look at it like we are married now you should of tell me and you didn't or what if she gets in the car with richard and they get in accident or something because he was plasterd so i think he would be mad she got into the car with him knowing he richard was drinkning something big is going to happened

I dont think this is about race, when did alcoholics become a race thing... Its a everyone persons thing. you can be white , black, yellow ,green , or purple for that matter. But this does happen in real life.doctores came drink to much and yes some my even see sick people and maybe even do a sugery . It been know to happen...Not right i know but still scary things do happen... so yeah its not a race thing its a human thing.

I'm posting this twice because I believe your both responding to the same comment and so am I.I believe your misunderstanding the complaint in your rush to point that alcoholism isn't discrimination. The point is about the direction of the Black characters. The only two Black characters seem to be fading into less important roles. In this case the chief is no longer practicing surgery and has been hit with a debilitating disease which will most likely subordinate his character to others much in the same way Izzy's cancer did, literally placing his character in a role similar to Meredith's father. Still the show is about Meredith and her young cohort of doctors. I think the biggest tragedy is that they cannot seem to find a place for Bailey since her interns have become residents. Where is she headed?

As I recall, Lexie's father is white as well as an alcoholic and the chief is a black alcoholic. Appears to be one for one. I wouldn't call this a race issue in the least. Just enjoy the show oldtimesoaper. The writer's are paid to entertain you not play a role in racial influences.

Yes she should tell probably Christina or Derek the obvious choices. Him drinking again could endanger his patients lives. However, is understanable why she isn't saying anything, even though she knows she should. They have a huge history together and he is like a father to her (even though she hates to admit it.) I think she is torn right now but after thinking it over for awhile, she will eventually tell someone. She knows what can happen, and that someone could end up dying because of this. Her patients and saving lives means too much to her and there is no way she will be able to keep this quiet for long.

its really sad to think that there are people out there that feel that there race is EXPENDABLE. Every race on this show has dealt with issues and overcome them. It was just the chief's turn. He too will get past this. A lot of these shows are dramatic and not things that would happen in a real world but a lot of the issues are things that REAL people deal with everyday... People of all races.

cpaloa

Why is this a racial thing? The question wasn't even about race, was it? It's about whether Meredith should tell someone about the chief's drinking and as most of you said, yes, she should. Especially if lives are at stake. I wouldn't want my surgeon drunk, before he operated on me.

Tonight I watched my last episode of Grey's, episode 127. I am disgusted with the direction. There are not many black role models on TV. Grey's had two. I don't know how you can take a character like Chandra's and fade her into the background. If she's doing something else with the show, do something with her character. Bring another firecracker in. And don't get me started on the Chief. In the real world Derreck would be fired by now. Ok, then the Chief would get the boot also, and Derreck hired back. But to turn him into a drunk, disgusting. No matter how you look at it we (black) people are always expendable in the movies (mirroring what's really thought of us in real life. We are the first to go.

OMG are you that small minded and stuck in lala land that EVERYTHING on the planet has to be turned into a race issue? believe me i am a advocate for all things being fair and equal, but TV in general blow EVERYTHING out of proportion if you are partacking in it, YOU HAVE TO EXCEPT THAT Every female that is considered "attractive" on tv has the same look, which totally effects young girls perception of beauty, white OR black. They are also all Insanely smart and successful but still tan, have nice hair and make up, make it to the gym everyday while maintaining a dream relationship with Dr mc luvin, or whatever they call him, a task that as woman, we are now expected to achieve in REALITY(and it is not easy or even attainable for most)..... BUT if i decide to engage in television, i EXCEPT these out of proportion characters because thats what TV is. IF you dont like it, support other venues, like local tv, media and radio you can influence more directly. AND talk to your children about what life is REALLY like, or dont let them watch it if you think these are bad roll models. THIS is NOT childrens programing..... Its for ADULTS and if YOU still need a positive roll model as an adault, i wouldnt be looking for it on Greys Anatomy...get a therapist, geez! Not to mention, your insane if you think an alcoholic black person on tv is the world being raciest. Do you want to writers to only writes black people in a positive light, so that they are giving them preferential treatment? That is more racist then anything, if only because it is causing the writers to look at skin color instead of just pure character development. Maybe there are more white people on TV now days still, but other races are increasingly present in star rolls, but if you look at percentages, there are probably pretty equal matches for "good" and "bad" characters. Continuing to push the race card in such a superficial arenas as mainstream TV is a silly, If you really want to have an impact on the world, stop watching tv all together, because the WHOLE thing is messed up, not just bad characters for black people. or at the very least keep mainstream media out of your childrens view until YOU have instilled the views YOU want them to have on the world into them. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY..... DONT BLAME TV AND OTHERS. YOU ARE RAISING YOUR CHILDREN AND THE FUTURE OF THIS WORLD

What do you think? I'm sorry that people hundreds of years ago treated blacks like crap, that was wrong, but you cannot say that everytime something bad happens to a black person that "its because their black". true there are racists out there, but thats the minority, and now a days I don't understand how when we have a black president everything is still supressing the blacks. FYI blacks are more likely to get jobs or not get told off when they deserve it (At least young adults) because everyone else, not just whites are to afraid to say any thing because then it would become a race card. You take everything so personally and act like the world is out to get you because people years ago were stupid. And while you always use the race card even when its not about your skin tone but your attitude, and the same comment made to you would be made to any one acting that way, everyone else on the earth is considered racist. YOU ARE MORE RACIST BY SAYING THAT. and im so glad you dont know me so i can say this because Whites are being treated crappier then ever since you always look at the past. some of the wealthiest people i know are black, and i commend them for working so hard to get there. It the people who have made something and worked there way up who seem to not use the race card. people seem to think all there failures is because of the past. guess what, you want to go to college, there are double the scholarships helping you. SO STOP THROWING IT IN EVERYONES FACE, and learn to fend for yourselves. if you see silly shows as racist you probably see everything else in your life as racism as well. i love peope no matter what there skin color, hair color, clothes or friends look like so i dont like not being able to tell someone when they are out of place or just plain rude in fear of being called racist. PEOPLE LIKE YOU ALWAYS SEEM TO CALL US RACIST BUT JUDGE US MORE ON OUR RACE THEN NE THING. your struggles were overcome by your great great grandparents and its not your problem any more. so trust that God has something better for you, realize life comes with trials and that everyone has them. Look for something more positive in people then this. and i think the reason they gave him a drinking problem was to bring him into the spotlight of the show more and a chief surgene having a drinking problem is dramatic no matter the race. not to make you "the first to go"...whatever thats about.

What do you think? I love Grey's Anatomy, and even if lately they have gonna in circle with the actors i think the story line can be better, no offense to anyone every time the shows affect or shows a (black) actor in trouble people use the race issue, a (white) actor does it and its ok.. the show needs to change its directions in order not to keep losing viewers or rating.... i don't like the way it has done things but they have great actors and actresses of all cultures .

He's not cutting anymore, so why would she want to mention it? He'll screw up soon enough in his paperwork and that'll create a solution. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink (so to speak). Drunks/Addicts can't be helped until they actually realize they need and WANT help.......just the way it is. Cheers from a Bible Believer and GA Regular.

What do you think? She should tell Derek - duh. Please allow Meredith the intelligence and integrity of being honest with her husband. Please let her be an example to other wives and women of the importance of trust in a marriage. Some believe it is greater to be trusted than loved. Meredith and Derek finally have the love, please let themhave the trust. They are the best example on Grey's of what a good relationship can be.

I don't think it's right. She's seen her father ruin his life from alcohol, why would she let the chief go through the same thing? He obviously is screaming out for help. I think it would be very wrong if she didn't tell anyone

This is my first time posting. I really like Grey's anatomy, but this one I only give a 2 out of 10. It went way too fast and had too much plot and not enough character, which I was going to say about last week's episode too, but I could not figure out how to sign up. After all these years of being with the cheif, don't we deserve to see the moment where he decides to start drinking again? We don't even get to look at his face as we realize he is back drinking. Instead, the realization comes from seeing Joe pouring him a drink. Does the montage mean he was drinking during all those things? If he was drinking before the car accident, then wouldn't he have been arrested for driving while drunk? Hmmm, I think Meredith should tell Derek. Although, it seems like a lot of people would have realized it after the Xmas party. Overall, it is a good show, but this episode....not so good. Thank you.

She should tell someone, and it should be Derek, not only because he is her husband but if anyone can help the Chief out, it's him. The Chief put her in a really tough position, maybe thinking that by having Meredith on his side, Derek won't be much of an issue to him, but hey, it might save his life.

Meredith should tell the Chief that if he doesn't take a leave of absence to get his drinking under control, she will tell Derek. That will give the Chief a chance to make the right choice without jeopardizing the lives of others as well as his job. If he doesn't heed her advice, then she should tell Derek so he can report Richard to the Hospital Board. It will make the decision easier for her to make if she doesn't have to personally report Richard.

imagoodthing

As others have said, she is in a difficult position. I am not clear if she was accepting a "bribe" from the Chief to keep quiet. Did she see his working with her as a return for her silence? Was she sucked in by his compliments and her seeing him as a father figure? Was it some of both. I think that she should tell Derek. Derek should go to Adele. The Chief obviously needs help. He needs it for his own good and for the good of the hospital. I do think that this will be the cause of any problems between Meredith and Derek. He might see her not telling him as an act of betrayal. I hope that they will learn from this and move forward.

I wish Meredith had told Derek after the show on the 12th. Secrets have a way of coming out. The chief was Derek’s mentor and friend and Derek knows about the alcoholism and would try to get him some help. Now the chief is asking her if she told and she says no and agrees to keep his secret. She can’t fix him. No one can fix an alcoholic. Since when does Meredith play the dead mommy card? She’s never asked the chief for favors and always wanted to be treated just like another intern/resident. I’m glad that she is getting a storyline but I hope it doesn’t end badly. Like when Thatcher was in the ER and told her she was his favorite and was so proud of her and then Lexie sets her straight and she is devastated. And I hope he doesn’t go back to surgery and she covers for him. Already did that with tremor gate with Burke and Yang.

I think Meredith should help the chief, and convince him to admit his problem. I don't think it is Meredith's place to tell everyone about it, but she should get help for the chief. Meredith has never been a character who tells people everyone's secrets, but she has been known to help others sort their issues out. I would really love to see this story play out with Meredith and Richard, I enjoy their scenes together.

agree with brocklyn Mer should tell Adelee let his wife deal with the chief's problem.

dlferriola

I think she should tell his wife and Derek. This is too big a secret to keep to herself because the Chief needs help now. Der knew he had an alcoholic problem and might be able to direct her in the right area of counselors to help him. His wife has been through this before and might not want to go through it again but you never know. If she loves him enough she will be willing to stick around and straighten him out. The Chief is going to have to cooperate and get his act together or his career and marriage might be over.
